Frequently Asked Questions
About Counselling
Here are some answers to the questions we are most often asked:
What is a counsellor?
Counsellors are here to investigate and explore life’s difficulties with you, and to support you and help you to see things from new perspectives.
A counsellor will create a safe and trusting relationship with you where you can speak honestly about the way you feel and the hurdles you face.
Counsellors do not diagnose mental illness or prescribe medication; they will mainly focus on the way you relate to yourself and with others.
How is a counsellor different to a psychologist?
Psychologists are registered professionals that study human behaviour and mental processes.
They can use surveys and other tools to diagnose mental health conditions.
They can work with you to create treatment plans for mental health conditions that you may have.
Do I need a referral for counselling?
Are there Medicare rebates for counselling?
Unfortunately, no.
Can I claim counselling services from my private health fund?
Some health funds offer rebates for counselling services, and some do not.
Please enquire with your private health fund to see if you are eligible to get a rebate on your counselling appointment.
